New events in India

NEW DELHI: Notwithstanding the current economic downturn, some big prize-money international tournaments are set to increase golfing activities in India.

“We have found a new sponsor for a tri-sanctioned event in February 2010. It will be co-sanctioned by the European Tour, the Asian Tour and the Professional Golf Tour of India (PGTI),” PGTI Director Padamjit Sandhu said on Tuesday.

The PGTI is also trying to rope in another sponsor for an Asian Tour event around the same time. “These two will be held

back-to-back in the National Capital Region. We are in the final stages of signing a sponsor for this half-a-million dollar Asian Tour event,” Mr. Sandhu said.

After the Indian Open and the SAIL Open, this will be the third Asian Tour meet in India. Details on the events will be announced in a week’s time.

In two years’ time, the PGTI hopes to organise two tri-sanctioned and two or three co-sanctioned events. “We are in talks with the European Tour about another big event in 2011,” Mr. Sandhu said. — Sports Reporter
