NEW DELHI: Veteran table tennis administrator Hukum Singh passed away here on Tuesday following a massive heart attack. He was 83. According to close associate S.K. Jolly, Mr. Hukum Singh had two teeth extracted on Monday and was in acute discomfort. Late on Monday, he complained of increase in pain and he was shifted to a hospital near his residence in Karol Bagh. The end came at 3 a.m. Associated with the development of the game in the Capital as the Organising Secretary of the Delhi Table Tennis Association for the last 47 years, Mr. Hukum Singh held office in the Table Tennis Federation of India till March 2008. Following the TTFI’s decision to disaffiliate DTTA, Mr. Hukum Singh was involved in litigation with the game’s governing body. He continued to hold tournaments in the Capital though the events were not recognised by the TTFI. Known for his passion for the game despite his ripe age, this octogenarian organiser continued to host more than 15 local tournaments every season. With Mr. Hukum Singh as the key functionary of the DTTA, Delhi produced National champions like Indu Puri, Manjit Dua, Manmeet Singh and National age-group champions like Ritu Bhola and Ekta Bhambri. “We have lost a gentle soul.He was always ready to help the players and ever ready to organise a tournament for juniors especially. His death is a great loss to table tennis in India,” said Manjit Dua. The cremation will take place at the Panchkuian Road cremation centre on Wednesday at 10.30 a.m.
