Advani keeps medal hopes alive in 15-red snooker


Advani enters quarterfinals with two wins on Tuesday

Manan Chandra also gets off to a good start


Hanoi: Reigning world champion Pankaj Advani kept India’s hopes alive in the third Indoor Asian Games after advancing to the quarterfinals of the 15-red snooker discipline here on Tuesday.

Advani, who had crashed out in the pre-quarterfinals of the 6-red event on Monday, showed immense maturity and depth in technique and won both his encounters of the day in the 15-red.

Riding high on some gutsy potting and excellent cushion work, Advani defeated Hong Kong’s Au Chi Wai 35-74 69-38, 72-0, 69-21, 14-76, 67-15 in the first match, and later rallied from two frames down to beat Brunei’s Husain Mahmood Ali Mahmood 61-68, 44-63, 73-18, 77-12, 67-29, 63-9.

Manan Chandra, who came agonisingly close to a medal in the 6-red event only to end up fourth, started his campaign in the 15-red beating Brunei’s Ahmed Ghulam Hasan Muanedi 69-29, 79-15, 64-8, 70-44.

In the 1-cushion carom, Vijay Goel crashed out, losing 100-35 to Japan’s Tadashi Machida.

Impressive vovinam performances

Pratiksha Santosh Shinde of Maharahstra clinched four medals including a gold as Indian vovinam squad put up impressive performance to earn seven medals.

Shinde, after earning the gold in single performance category, joined compatriots Rahul Kumar, Shashank B. Kathade and Devrao S. Kapse to fetch silver in the multiple attack technique section.

Pratiksha then paired up with Akanksha Sahai to fetch another silver in dual sword, before earning her third silver medal in fights category.

Chongtham M. Singh and Deven Moirangthem won bronze in fight section.

In men’s leg attack technique category, the Indian team — comprising Rahul, Devrao, Shashank and I Kanta Singh — bagged another silver.

Chess bronzes

Meanwhile, K. Shashikiran and D. Harika won bronze medals in men’s and women’s chess events, respectively.

Shashikiran (0.5) went down to Wang Hue (1.5) of China, while in women’s section Harika (0.5) lost to Zuethen (1.5) of Qatar.

Besides, Praveen Thakur won the 73kg bronze in boys’ Kurash event while his female counterpart Shailey bagged bronze in 57kg section.

In Muay, both Harish Kumar and Shalu clinched bronze in 51-54 kg category of men’s and women’s event, respectively. — PTI
