Chennai: A century from left-handed opener Ravi Inder Singh helped Punjab end day one of its Ranji Trophy season-opener against Mumbai at Sector 16 Stadium in Chandigarh at 242 for nine. The 21-year-old Ravi Inder, who struck 17 fours and a six in his 251-ball knock, was the lone bright spot in a Punjab innings punctuated regularly by wickets from its star opening bowlers Zaheer Khan and Ajit Agarkar. Zaheer, who returned to competitive action last month in the C.K. Nayudu Trophy Twenty20 tournament after a four-month absence through injury, picked up three wickets, starting with the caught-behind dismissal of opener Sunny Sohal in the fifth over of the day. After this came a stand of 68 between Ravi Inder and Uday Kaul, the biggest of the Punjab innings. Wicketkeeper Kaul made 28 before edging Agarkar to his opposite number Vinayak Samant. The only other batsmen who crossed 20 were debutant off-spinner Gaurav Gambhir (21) and seamer Manpreet Gony (30 not out) who added 45 and 33 with Ravi Inder for the sixth and eighth wickets. Ravi Inder, eighth out after taking Punjab to 233, was Agarkar’s third victim. The former India seamer then trapped Harmeet Singh leg-before two overs from close of play.
