Nirupama and Shiva Kumar breeze to victories

BANGALORE: Nirupama Sunderraj and M.M. Shiva Kumar scorched the newly-laid synthetic tracks at the Sree Kanteerava Stadium on the opening day of the three-day 25th State junior athletic championship here on Tuesday.

Nirupama, a Pre-University student of Ebenezer International School, breezed through in 11.6s to eclipse Yamini D. Rao’s previous State mark of 12s set in 2006.

Shiva Kumar of CSTT (Jain Group) ran a superb 11.3s in the boys’ under-16 section with Allen Gilbert BSC and Akash B. Rao (DK) emerging the fastest in the u-18 and u-20 sections respectively.

Two more records

Two other records too fell by the wayside. Joyline M. Lobo leapt to a distance of 12.30m to better Shilpa Sequeira’s 10-year mark of 12.28m in the girls’ under-20 long jump.

Mrudula Halgekar of Belgaum accelerated in the final 80m to finish ahead of Archana of Madikeri. Mrudula clocked 1:42.3s to beat C.A. Nithyashree’s year-old-mark of 1:43.0.

Aishwarya’s winning return

G.M. Aishwarya made a winning return to athletics. The UVCE student, who suffered a crippling injury during the Commonwealth Youth Games last year, took the long jump silver and the high jump gold in the girls’ under-20 category.

Boys:

Under-20: 100m: Akash B. Rao (DK, 10.7s); 800m: Vishwambhar Kolekar (Rai Athletic Club, 1:57.1s); Javelin: Tippanna (SAI, Dharwad, 54.59m).

Under-18: 100m: Alan Gilbert (BSC, 11.0s); 800m: Naveen (DYSS, Blr, 2:01.6); Discus: Sayed Zejahzain (Dakshin Kannada, 40.94m).

Under-16: 100m: Shiva Kumar MM (CSTT, 11.3); 800m: Tirupathi (Bagalkore, 2:05.1s); High jump: Hamdan (Dakshin Kannada, 1.86m); Javelin: Bhargavi Choudary (Devamatha, Blr, 12.15m); Discus: Manoj Kumar (Mangala, 38.55).

Under-14: 600m: 1. Yamanappa Ngingi (Bagalkote, 1:35.0); High jump: Kundan Kumar (India Int School, 1.50m); Triathlon: S.P. Shivangi (SS, Chandargi, 1565 pts).

Girls:

Under-20: 100m: Moulya BU (Alva’s Moodbidri, 12.7); Shot put: Sushma (DYSS, Mysore. 10.63m); Javelin: Shahejahani (DYSS, Mysore, 37.80m); High jump: Aishwarya (Indo-German SC, 1.50m); Long jump: Pallavi Sukumar (St. Joseph’s College of Commerce, 5.60m); Triple jump: Joyline M. Lobo (Alva’s Moodbidri, 12.30m, NMR); 800m: Shruthi (DYSS, Blr, 2:18.7).

Under-18: 100m: Nirupama Sunderraj (Indo-German SC, 11.6, NMR); 800m: Swetha (SAI, Shimoga, 2:25.2s); High jump: Sumithra (SS, Kudige, 1.43m); Triple jump: K. Bhavya Mandanna (Indo-German SC, 10.96m); Discus: Kavya (Govt. College, Shimoga, 28.18).

Under-16: 100m: Bhuvi B. Shankar (Vidyanagar, 13.0s); 800m: Priyanka (CSTT, Blr, 2:20.5); 1,000m medley relay: Sports Hostel, Mysore (2:27.4s); Discus: Athira Varkey (SS, Vidyanagar, 25.27m).

Under-14: 600m: Mrudula Halgekar (Belgaum, 1:42.3s NMR); Triathlon: S. Praneetha Pradeep (Indo-German, 1629 pts).

Easy for NHPS

New Horizon Public School (NHPS) defeated Bethany High 52-26 in the Clarence High School inter-school basketball tournament held at the school premises here.

Hari and Farhaan top scored for New Horizon with 16 and 14 points, respectively.

The results:

Boys: Clarence HS 34 (Isaac 16) bt Mallya Aditi International School 11; New Horizon Public School 52 (Hari 16, Farhaan 14) bt Bethany High 26 (Varun 14).

Girls: Sophia School 20 bt Mallya Aditi International School 12.

Kashyap bags title

Santosh Kashyap, with 10 points bagged the title in the ICA rapid open chess championship which concluded at the State Youth Centre here on Sunday.

In the 11th and final round, Kashyap drew with J.K.Gautam, who finished with 8.5 points. Abhishek Das ( 9.5 ) and H.Naveen ( 9) secured the second and third positions respectively.
