This Day That Age
A proposal to set up four new army commands under the present Jorhat Headquarters to strengthen India’s border security along the McMahon Line is now being “seriously considered” by the Army authorities, well-informed sources disclosed in Shillong on November 3. The proposal, stated to have emerged from a recent high-level meeting, held in Shillong, envisages the immediate establishment of one command each in Kameng. Sabansiri and Siang divisions of the North-East Frontier Agency area. Another at Tirap would also be set up probably in a month’s time, these sources said. At present, the forces on the border are under an overall command, with headquarters at Jorhat and an advance post at Foothills. The proposal is expected to be finalised in the next few days when Lt.-Gen. S.P. Thorat, GOC, commanding Eastern Command, visits Shillong and perhaps some of the border areas and Jorhat, these sources said.
