News Analysis
The third paragraph of a report “Deora orders probe into IOC fire” (October 31, 2009) was “The terminal gets its supplies from the IOC’s Mathura refinery through a pipeline and feeds a significant portion of the market in Rajasthan ...”, leading to a query. The Special Correspondent says: The Jaipur IOC Depot’s General Manager (Sales and Operations), Mr. Gautam Bose, has clarified that the terminal gets its regular supply of petroleum products from the IOC’s refinery at Koyali, in Gujarat, through a pipeline. If there is a snag in the pipeline or there is an urgent requirement, it gets supplies from the Mathura refinery by surface transport (tankers). To say that the terminal gets its supplies from the IOC’s Mathura refinery through a pipeline is an error. The first paragraph of a report “Jharkhand Phase I poll notified” (November 1, 2009) said that the filing of nominations for Phase-I of the five phase Jharkhand Assembly election began on Saturday, while the fourth paragraph said that the last date for filing nominations is November 7, with the last date for withdrawal of candidature being November 11. The detail in the report is right. The dates for filing nominations, withdrawal, etc., were made as the Election Commission advanced the first phase of polling to November 25 instead of November 27 following representations from Muslims as there is a possibility of a change in the date that Bakrid falls on — November 28. The Election Commission made this announcement on October 28, 2009. In connection with a report published on October 24, 2009 “Five- phase polls in Jharkhand”, a sentence in the sixth paragraph should have said “during the last Assembly election (held on February 3, 15, 23 in 2005) the State went to polls in three phases.” In the 2009 Lok Sabha election, the polls were held on April 16 and 23, 2009 — i.e. in two phases. The caption of the Reuters photograph that went with a report “Barcelona and Liverpool feel the heat” (“Sport”, November 3, 2009) was “… Manchester United’s Michael Owen (right) challenges teammate Patrice Evra during training ahead of its trip to CSKA Moscow on Tuesday. It should have said “training ahead of their home match”. It was their (Man U) home match against CSKA Moscow on Tuesday, as said in the sixteenth paragraph. (Manchester United won the match by 1-0 against CSKA on October 21 at Moscow.) It is the policy of The Hindu to correct significant errors as soon as possible.
