HYDERABAD: Andhra Pradesh Congress Committee has urged the Central team that came to visit drought-affected areas in the State, to take the views of farmers, artisans, agricultural labourers to arrive at an estimate of loss. In a representation to the Central team, APCC spokesperson N.Tulasi Reddy, M.Konda Reddy, chairman, AP Kisan Congress and APCC coordinator and former Minister Mandali Buddaprasad said that 981 mandals out of 1,128 mandals in the State were hit by drought during the kharif. RainfallAs against the normal rainfall of 392.8 mm, the State recorded only 178.9 mm (minus 54 per cent) between June 1 and August 15. The meteorological data till September 30 also put the rainfall at -27 per cent as it reported only 446 mm as against normal of 624 mm. The drought conditions adversely affected agricultural production, horticulture, rural drinking water supply, animal husbandry and rural employment. The State with its limited resources had to tackle scarcity of foodgrain and fodder to livestock. The government for its part, released Rs.471 crore towards input subsidy in the drought-hit areas while PCC president D. Srinivas held a meeting with State-level representatives of traders to be humane in fixing the prices of essential commodities and asked them not to create artificial scarcity of pulses and other foodgrain.
