MLA gets jail term for assault on policemen

Staff Reporter

Thiruvananthapuram: Judicial First Class Magistrate-III, Philip Thomas, on Tuesday sentenced eight persons, including Congress legislator P.C. Vishnunath, to three months of simple imprisonment after he found them guilty of assaulting policemen and preventing them from doing their duty.

The other accused in the case are Leader of the Opposition Oommen Chandy’s personal staff members Benny Jopan and Jikku Mon, and Congress workers M. Muneer, Shibu Augustine, Rajeev and Shajin.

The prosecution case is that in 2002 the accused assaulted constable Surendran and Assistant Sub Inspector Sasindran Nair during a student agitation in front of the University Senate Hall. The police were attacked when they tried to prevent the student activists from storming the university premises.

The court granted them bail in the case for appealing against the sentence in higher courts.
