Rehabilitation work to go full throttle

Special Correspondent

Bangalore: Chief Minister B.S. Yeddyurappa has said that the rehabilitation work in all the flood-affected districts of the State is gradually being stepped up and the first of the new housing colonies will be ready in about six months.

Mr. Yeddyurappa returned from a tour of Bijapur district with the Union Minister for Law and Justice M. Veerappa Moily, where the foundation stone for relocated villages were laid. He said that his focus was not on political developments but in speeding up rehabilitation work.

The Chief Minister said he would seek the support of all political leaders irrespective of their party affiliations to join him in the rehabilitation work. The Adichunchanagiri seer accompanied him on a tour of Gadag district and agreed to participate in the construction of houses. Union Home Minister P. Chidambaram participated in a foundation laying programme in Badami taluk of Bagalkot district.

Mr. Yeddyurappa said he would be calling on Prime Minister Manmohan Singh in Delhi on Thursday. “I will request him to join us to lay the foundation for a new village. We have already released Rs. 1,200 crore to the district authorities to start rebuilding villages. Of this, nearly Rs. 1,000 crore has already been spent. Our aim is to ensure that all new villages are model townships with community halls, medical facilities and schools.” The formation of housing layouts had already commenced in about ten districts and the construction work would be in full swing in the next one month. The Government is also in the process of entering into a memorandum of understanding with private donors who have come forward to rebuild villages, he said. Mr. Yeddyurappa later presided over a high-level meeting to prepare a comprehensive action plan on the reconstruction of villages and other work.
