‘Funds allocation for college libraries not enough’

State-level seminar on libraries in Dharwad

‘Colleges should extend support to librarians’

DHARWAD: C.R. Karisiddappa, former Chief Librarian of Karnatak University, has said that in the changing competitive world, funds allocated to college libraries were inadequate.

He was inaugurating a State-level seminar on “College Library Development in the era of Information Communication Technology” organised by JSS College and the Association of Karnatak University Librarians here on Monday.

Mr. Karisiddappa said that in an age when the electronic media was providing a wide range of information, there was a need for bringing about comprehensive changes in libraries. He said that one problem or the other existed in the maintenance of libraries and librarians should be committed to solve them. There should also be requisite support from college administration.

President of the association S.L. Kadadevaramath underscored the need for teachers and students making use of the libraries effectively to extend their knowledge base. He said that steps should be taken to ensure that students had access to all books in the libraries.

Presiding over the inaugural ceremony, Principal of JSS College Ajit Prasad said that there was a need for organising workshops for principals and members of the management boards of colleges apart from organising seminars for librarians.

Librarians S.G. Tigadi, S.C. Patil and B.S. Malawad were honoured. Resource persons S.L. Sangam, Viru Uppin and I.H. Jahagirdar spoke on different issues.

Around 150 librarians from different colleges affiliated to Karnatak University participated in the seminar.
