For the first time, KPA trains four foreign police officers

The four officers will pass out on November 10

Second batch comprising six Maldivian

sub-inspectors have begun training

MYSORE: The Karnataka Police Academy (KPA), Mysore, the State’s premier training institute for newly recruited police officers, has achieved a rare distinction. For the first time, the academy, has successfully trained a batch of foreign police officers.

With this, the KPA has become one of the few police training institutions in the country to train police officers from abroad.

Four police officers of the rank of inspector from the Republic of Maldives will pass out on November 10 after the successful completion of a one-year theoretical and practical training course.

Fathuhulla Waheed, Mohammad Nadeem, Yoosuf Bushry and Moosa Rashid, along with six sub-inspectors of the State, will pass out at a function to be held at the KPA parade grounds here.

KPA Director and Inspector-General of Police A.M. Prasad told The Hindu that the Maldivian officers underwent similar training modules like our gazetted probationers. They were taught key aspects of policing such as operations, procedures and modalities, nuances of law, human rights, law of forensic science and forensic medicine among others.

Training was also imparted in areas that were of significance to their nation. The officers were trained in community policing, coastal policing, civil defence and disaster management.

Mr. Prasad said that the officers were trained on the instructions of the Government of India. Senior-level Maldivian police officers are being trained at Sardar Vallabhai Patel National Police Academy in Hyderabad.

The KPA director said that the second batch comprising six Maldivian sub-inspectors, who recently joined the academy, have begun training.

KPA which first started as a police training school in 1913 was upgraded to a police training college in 1958. It was awarded the status of academy in 1992.

In addition to imparting basic training to new recruits at the levels of deputy superintendents of police and police sub-inspectors, it also imparts post-institutional training for IPS officers allotted to the Karnataka cadre, according to information available on the KPA’s website. The KPA conducts training courses in specialised subjects for in-service police officers to update their knowledge and skills.
