Hoteliers’ stance

Staff Reporter

KOLLAM: The Kerala Hotel Vyavasai Association has claimed that last week’s food poisoning incident in Kollam, at a function attended by Chief Minister V.S. Achuthanandan, occurred because the chicken biriyani distributed was consumed much later than it should have been consumed.

P. Rajan, who supplied the biriyani, said since the order was for 2000 biriyanis, he had started the preparation process the previous day itself since the biriyani had to be supplied by 12 noon the next day. The biriyani had also to be packed in 2,000 containers.

The preparation time was scheduled in such way that the biriyani would have quality for consumption at noon.

But the organisers of the function did not provide the space for guests to consume it at the venue. Hence, a good number of them took the packets home and shared it with family members as supper.

By that time, the biriyani had become stale and the same had been pointed out by the food safety wing of the government.

“It is a fact that those who consumed it as meal at noon were not affected. In this situation, action initiated against the caterer should be withdrawn,” the association demanded.
