Thiruvananthapuram: An 11-year-old boy drowned on his way to school on Tuesday while crossing a 100-m stretch of the Neyyar Dam reservoir on a raft near Amboori. The police identified the deceased as Sijo Thomas, a 5th standard student of St. Thomas Higher Secondary School, Amboori. The incident occurred in the Charuku Para area where people use rafts for their daily journey to the mainland. They propel the rafts by pulling on a thick rope tied to wooden stakes on either side of the crossing. The police said Sini, Sijo’s sister and a 4th standard student of the same school, was on the raft when the incident happened. They suspect the raft to have capsized while the siblings were making their daily crossing to school.
