Rotten tomatoes for Bt brinjal

Staff Reporter

BANGALORE: Several activists of Swadeshi Jagaran Manch and Bharathiya Kisan Sangha staged a protest in front of Mahatma Gandhi statue here on Tuesday against the commercialisation of Bt brinjal in India saying it would have adverse impact on health and environment.

Shouting slogans, they criticised the decision of the Genetic Engineering Approval Committee (GEAC) that approved the introduction of Bt brinjal.

“When there is much opposition to genetically modified (GM) foods in the European Union, why should India allow cultivation of such food crops? The country is also not facing any brinjal shortage,” national co-convener of Swadeshi Jagaran Manch B.M. Kumarswamy said. With the introduction of the Bt brinjal, local varieties could be harmed, he added.

He apprehended that the GEAC nod would result in approval for over 50 food crops that are in various stages of field trials.
