Coimbatore: The renovated sub jail at Udhagamandalam is to be re-opened very shortly as the works are nearing completion, Deputy Inspector-General of Prison, Coimbatore Range, P. Govindarajan said on Tuesday. Mr.Govindarajan told The Hindu that for taking up renovation works and construction of a compound wall after the existing one collapsed, the sub jail remained closed for almost four years. All the remand and undertrial prisoners hailing from the Nilgiris districts were kept at the Coimbatore Central Prison. This resulted in the prisoners being escorted to various places in the Nilgiris for trial and remand extensions. The relatives and family members of the prisoners had to travel all the way from various places in the Nilgiris to Coimbatore for visiting the prisoners. Even this ordeal would come to an end and the prisoners could be visited at the sub-jail henceforth. CapacityGoing by the present population at Central Prison at Coimbatore, the prison authorities anticipate the sub-jail at Udhagamandalam would accommodate 50 to 70 prisoners. The renovation and compound wall workers at an outlay of Rs 32 lakhs had been completed and the inauguration of the same is expected to be in mid November or latest by last week of the month.
