CHECKING PARAMETERS: Trial run of the Nilgiris Mountain Railway using diesel locomotives between Kallar and Hillgrove stations on Saturday. SALEM: The trial run of a diesel locomotive on the Nilgiris Mountain Railway in the Mettupalayam - Hillgrove sector on October 31 has proved to be a successful one. The composition of the train for the run had five coaches pushed by YDM4 diesel locomotive and also backed by a steam locomotive. The train moved over the rack section up to 8.2 km. The haulage and braking efficiency of the diesel locomotive were tested successfully along with the steam loco in the critical section where the gradient was challenging. It achieved a maximum speed of around 13 km per hour. The locomotive with 5 coaches ran up to Hillgrove Station, a distance of 10 km, and all the parameters were ‘satisfactory.’ A release from Salem Railway Division on Tuesday said that a team of senior officials including V.Carmelus, Chief Mechanical Engineer, Chennai, P. N. Ram, Divisional Railway Manager, Salem Division, Parmanand Singh, Chief Motive Power Engineer, Diesel, Chennai, and officials monitored the run.
