MAKING WAY: The TNHB tenements being demolished on Monday. CHENNAI: The demolition of the Tamil Nadu Housing Board (TNHB) tenements on 25.16 acres in Foreshore Estate in the city began on Monday. The move will pave the way for the redevelopment of 74 acres in the area, including the slum tenements in the neighbouring Nochikuppam and Srinivasapuram. “The multi-storeyed redevelopment to be taken up under the public-private mode will be carried out in a world class manner making optimum use of the permitted FSI,” Housing and Urban Development Secretary Surjit K. Chaudhary told presspersons after inspecting the launch of the demolition work. A concept paper on redevelopment of the 74-acre land will be prepared with the help of the Tamil Nadu Urban Finance Infrastructure Services Limited (TUFISL), he added. The work order to demolish the remaining 892 of the 1,112 TNHB quarters in Foreshore Estate was issued on Saturday. The demolition of the quarters in a dilapidated condition would be completed in two months, Mr.Chaudhary said. In the past nine years, 220 houses were pulled down. The long-drawn-out conflict between the TNHB and the occupants of its Foreshore Estate tenements came to an end with the Board forcibly evicting 120 residents who had been overstaying. The Madras High Court in its order dated August 5 this year had said that the Housing Board would be free to take any coercive step for taking possession of the flats in question. “The occupants who cooperated with the TNHB would be given alternative houses in the same area after redevelopment,” said Mr.Chaudhary. The 120 occupants who did not cooperate will not be issued tokens for alternative accommodation in the same place, he said. The demolition has been carried out after all the 18 cases in the Madras High Court have been contested and won, he added.
