T.V. Sivanandan

10-day Industrial Exhibition being held as part of the urs

GULBARGA: The five-day 605th Urs-e-Sharief of 14th century Sufi saint Hazrat Khaja Bande Nawaz Gesudaraz, a symbol of religious tolerance and whose message of love and compassion created a permanent bondage between Hindus and Muslims in the region, will be held here from Wednesday.

A large number of devotees from all over the country and abroad will converge in the city, which was once the capital of the Bahamani sultanate, to participate in the “urs” and offer obeisance at the Dargah Sharief.

The religious ceremonies preceding the Urs-e-Sharief, including the “Khidmat-I Fatiha”, “Band Sama” and distribution of “Tabarruk” at the Dargah Sharief, began on Tuesday.

On Wednesday, “Khidmat-I Farrashi” and “Band Sama” will be held at the Dargah Sharief, followed by “Namas-e-Asir” at the Mehbub Gulshan public garden in the city after which the traditional event of carrying the sandal paste from the garden to the Dargah Sharief will be held. The sandal paste will be anointed on the tomb of Khaja Bande Nawaz in the mausoleum built by the then Bahamani king Ahmed Shaha Wali Bahamani, marking the beginning of the Urs-e-Sharief.

The 14th century Sufi saint was a disciple of Hazrat Khwaja Pir Naseeruddin Mahmood, who is also popularly known as Chirag of Delhi.

Khaja Bande Nawaz played an important role in preaching Islam in the Indian context during the 14th century.

First prose writer

Khaja Bande Nawaz, considered the first prose writer in Urdu, wrote 195 books in Arabic, Persian and Urdu.

Sajjada Nasheen Syed Shaha Gesudaraz Khusro Hussaini, the direct descendant of Khaja Bande Nawaz, would lead the procession from the public garden on Wednesday evening.

As part of the “urs”, a 10-day Industrial Exhibition was inaugurated on Tuesday.
