Quarries want ban on mining to go

Correspondent

Quarry stones not available even for development work

People building houses are the most affected

Karwar: The Quarry and Crusher Owners’ Association of Karwar submitted a memorandum to the Deputy Commissioner of Uttara Kannada on Tuesday and requested him to lift the ban on mining in the district.

The ban was imposed three months ago.

Stones were not available even for development works being carried out by the Government and people who are building houses too have been hit, the association has said.

Karwar taluk has suffered from flood havoc and landslips. People, who lost their houses in the floods, are unable to rebuild houses because of scarcity of stones, the association said.

Many development works of the Government, including repairs to roads, too have been affected, it added.

The Deputy Commissioner has, in an order, asked a quarry owner to supply stones to the National Highway Authority of India for the construction and repair of a road. He even asked the police to provide the quarry owner adequate security as there is a fear of threat from other quarry owners. The quarry owner visited the office of the Deputy Commissioner on Tuesday with other quarry owners and refused to supply stones. He said that it would not be in the interests of the quarry owners.

He said that he is a member of the association and cannot defy the decisions of the association. He asked the authorities to take over the quarry to remove boulders and stones from it.

The Contractors Association too submitted a memorandum to the Deputy Commissioner and requested him to permit blasting and quarrying in the district.

The Deputy Commissioner and the Forest Department have banned quarrying in the forest areas till further orders.
