Fine to be imposed on overloaded lorries

Correspondent

Karwar: The Uttara Kannada district administration has, in a notification, warned that overloaded lorries will be fined Rs. 42,000. The fine is applicable every time the authorities catch an overloaded vehicle.

The Deputy Commissioner has, in his order, said that it is essential to protect national and state highways in the district which get damaged because of overloaded lorries.

The Deputy Commissioner cited an order of the Karnataka High Court which upheld a similar order of the Deputy Commissioner.

As many as 10 lorry owners had approached the High Court against a previous order of the district administration imposing penalty for overloading.

The Deputy Commissioner has said that he is reissuing the order based on complaints by the public.

The order added that the district administration would recover the money from the lorry owners as road repair cost.
