755 reconstruction projects under way in Davangere district

Staff Correspondent

Land for shifting 17 villages, two towns has been identified

DAVANGERE: As many as 115 schools buildings, 39 anganwadi kendras and 16 veterinary clinics in Davangere district, which were damaged in the recent floods, are being reconstructed, Deputy Commissioner K. Amaranarayan said. The district administration has approved over 755 projects at a total cost of Rs. 42.57 crore.

Replying to questions from Minister for Revenue G. Karunakara Reddy from Bangalore at a video-conference on Tuesday, Mr. Amaranarayan said that the district administration had approved the complete shifting of 17 villages and the partial shifting of two towns that were prone to floods. The two towns that are to be partially shifted are Honnali and Harapanahalli, the constituency of the Revenue Minister.

Later, the Deputy Commissioner told The Hindu that houses would be built on over 25 acres of private land that had been identified in Harapanahalli and over 221 families would be shifted there. Similarly, land had been identified for the shifting of the villages identified, and proposals had been sent to the Government for the purchase of the land.

Mr. Amaranarayan said that all the 755 projects taken up by the district administration were progressing well. Estimates had been prepared individually for each of the works, as each project had its own requirements depending upon the location. To a question, he said many school buildings that were old and dilapidated had also been included in the reconstruction. He noted that many school buildings, which were constructed using mud and wood under Operation Blackboard, were not safe. Such buildings would also be reconstructed, he said.

Mr. Amaranarayan said that Rs. 50 lakh had been spent on setting up gruel centres and providing food and shelter to over 9,700 flood affected families in the district.

He said that even now there were reports of houses collapsing. Houses that had absorbed rainwater during the floods were falling apart, he said. The district administration had so far registered 600 cases of house collapse.
