MBAs to fight it out at reality show

Special Correspondent

KOZHIKODE: A reality show based on international best-selling non-fiction books is being telecast by Kairali TV. Organised as a weekly 30-minute competition, the show — the first episode of which was telecast last Saturday — features teams from major MBA institutes. The competition involves discussions based on well known books on management, science, technology, and economics and is titled ‘MBA Grand Challenge 2009.’ It will be telecast from 3 to 3.30 p.m. on Saturdays, a press release issued in Kozhikode said.

Teams from around 40 management institutes in the State attended the screening tests held at Kozhikode, Kochi and Thiruvananthapuram recently. The top 12 teams will contest in the first round.

The books selected for the first round are The Elephant, the Tiger & the Cell Phone by Shashi Tharoor, From Bankruptcy to Billions by Sudhir Kumar & Shagun Melhrotra, The God Delusion by Richard Dawkins and The Black Swan by Nicholas Taleb.

Sam Santhosh, founder, CEO and MD of Calsoft, an IT Group, is the moderator and mastermind of the programme.

Format

Each round of contest has three segments. The first consists of presentations by the teams on the book highlighting its theme and giving insight and criticism. The second segment carries a debate on the book. The third is a buzzer quiz round. Three teams will compete in each round. A panel of three judges will assess their performance.

The preliminary round will be followed by semi-finals and finals and the winners based on their ranking will be adjudged the Super Managers in Kerala. Prizes worth Rs.5 lakh await the winners.

The programme was a small step to catalyse the growth of management resources in Kerala, Mr. Santhosh, an IIM-Kolkata alumni and guest speaker in MBA institutions, said. Each episode also poses questions to the viewers and offers prizes.
