Exquisite: An artist at the painting contest held in Mangalore. MANGALORE: In addition to Yakshagana, Bhootha Kola, there are over a dozen folk dances that form part of Tulu culture. And there are many folk sports apart from Kori Anka (cock-fight) and Kambala (buffalo race). However, 40 artists, who took part in the on-the-spot painting competition on Sunday and Monday organised by the Kudla Kalavali Kalavali Samiti in the run up to the Vishwa Tulu Sammelan, failed to go beyond the conventional subjects. Majority of the artworks that were on display at the SDM Law College in the city on Monday depicted Kambala, Bootha Kola, Kori Anka and Yakshagana. Dance-drama forms such as Pilipanji Kunitha, Maankali, Oddu Nalike, Kangilu, Aati Kalenja and Sonada Jogi did not find any space on the canvas. However, the artworks on display were not inferior in any way just because of the limited topics chosen. Though some of the works were accurate, almost photographic depictions of Tulu art forms, most of the artists dared to dabble in abstractions providing their own signature touch to the paintings. Some of the outstanding paintings were by Ganesh Somayyaji, Ramesh Kediyur, Zubair A.K., Harish Kodialbail, Jeevan Salian and Harish Acharya.
