GUNTUR: A very effective concept of keeping ‘shelter kits’ ready in disaster-prone areas at an easily accessible place in the United Kingdom has been replicated in India by the Rotary Club of Kolkata at some places in the country, where disaster/natural calamity struck in the form of earthquake, flood or Tsunami.

The recent floods in Andhra Pradesh moved the Kolkata unit of the Rotary to reach out to the needy in Thulluru mandal of Guntur district by donating 300 kits to people in Harishchandrapuram village.

Rotary International 3150 unit past district governor Ravi Vadlamani coordinated the entire programme, and on Tuesday Minister for Heavy Industries formally launched the ‘shelter kits’ at a godown in Guntur.

Speaking to reporters at the function, the Rotary member said that these kits were sufficient for a family to survive for at least one week without having to look for immediate relief material from outside their own area.

All in a box

These kits would be initially stocked at some place in Harishchandrapuram village and disbursed to the flood-affected people in four habitations along the Krishna in this week. The Shelter Kits Foundation Skyline House prepared the kits packed in metal boxes.

The kits contained two pieces of tarpaulin for making the tent – one as a floor cover and the other as a roof cover; two sheets of linen; two blankets; four stainless steel plates; four glasses; one kerosene stove; one lantern; one jerry can for water; another similar can for kerosene; three cooking utensils; three serving spoons; 500 chlorine tablets; one bucket and one mug; soap and tooth powder; two sets of clothes for men, women and two children; candles, match boxes and one mosquito net.

All these material with metallic box costs Rs.5,000. The Shelter Kit Foundation donated 3,000 such kits so far in India and was ready to donate more numbers in Guntur and Krishna districts, where people were affected by floods.

A group of their volunteers and the Rotary would visit the villages.
