Kozhikode: Defence Minister A.K. Antony unveiled the portrait of veteran lawyer and trade unionist P.M. Mohammed Ali at the Calicut Bar Association Hall on Tuesday. Speaking on the occasion, Mr. Antony remembered Ali as his leader during the early days of the Congress student movement. “At a time when my activities were restricted to just Cherthala and Alappuzha, Ali was known all over Kerala for his spell-binding oratory,” Mr. Antony said. “He greatly inspired the students of that generation to enter politics.” Mr. Antony said he had political differences with Ali but held him in great regard on a personal level and as an activist concerned over the ills in society. A. Viswanathan, president of the Calicut Bar Association, remembered Ali as a lawyer who fearlessly and forcefully argued his cases. “He strived for the welfare of the lower classes of society,” Mr. Viswanathan said. District Judge M.P. Ismail said Ali was a long-sighted person whose organisational skills were legendary. Mr. Ismail said the Bar Association would take a long time to recover from Ali’s loss. Speakers at the event remembered Ali for the encouragement he gave to fellow lawyers and juniors.
