Centre clears NSP modernisation proposal

Special Correspondent

HYDERABAD: The Central Government Economic Affairs and Expenditure departments have cleared a State proposal to get the Rs. 4,444-crore Nagarjunasagar modernisation project fully funded by the World Bank, instead of only 50 per cent now. The State had made the proposal in view of its financial crunch. Otherwise it would have had to bear 50 per cent of the project cost ( Rs 2,222 crore).

Announcing this here on Monday, Major Irrigation Minister P. Lakshmaiah said documents relating to the Central approvals would be sent to the World Bank soon with a request to enhance the funding to 100 per cent. As the bank had already offered to provide 100 per cent funds, subject to the Centre’s approval, its nod was expected at the earliest.

The project envisages modernisation of the right and left bank canals of Nagarjunasagar dam, which serves an ayacut of over 25 lakh acres in Guntur, Prakasam, Nalgonda, Khammam and Krishna districts, repairs/rectifications wherever required and refurbishing of the dam itself.

C. Ramachandraiah, Chief Engineer, told this correspondent that pending releases by the World Bank, the project was grounded last year with State funds.
