NO HOLDING BACK: Pinto Mathew broke the U-18 junior National hurdles record in the 53rd Kerala State junior athletics championship in Kochi on Sunday. KOCHI: A few years ago, Pinto Mathew went to the Pala Jumps Academy, a few miles from his home, to learn high jump. But V.C. Joseph, a seasoned coach, asked him to try out hurdling instead. His performance at the South Zone junior meet in Pudussery two years ago impressed SAI coach A. Bose who invited him to the Kozhikode SAI Centre. On Sunday, Pinto went past the under-18 junior National record in the 53rd Kerala State junior athletics championship at the Maharaja’s Stadium here in 14.02s. But Pinto may not stick to hurdling for long. “It’s my favourite event right now but I think as I grow up and enter the senior phase, I may have to concentrate on the triple jump,” said the 18-year-old. He had won the long jump gold here on Saturday. Sujith emerges fastestSujith Kuttan, son of Olympian Mercy Kuttan and former international Murali Kuttan, broke the under-18 boys’ 100m record. He also emerged as the championship’s fastest boy, his timing being faster than the under-20 winner. Ernakulam triple jumper P. Pranav produced a quality jump, 15.50m, in the under-18 section, which brushed aside the meet record without much fuss.
