KRISHNAGIRI: As part of its platinum jubilee celebrations, the Reserve Bank has decided to launch ‘Model Village Programme” in eight villages in the State. The aim is to ‘outreach its activities’ to villages across the State which have least number of commercial banks. The programme will be inaugurated at Tippireddihalli village in Dharmapuri district on Monday in which Indian Bank Chairman and Managing Director M.S. Sundara Rajan will be the guest of honour. K.R. Ananda, Regional Director, RBI (Tamil Nadu and Puducherry), Chennai, told The Hindu on Friday that the programme was conceived to reach out to the people at the grassroot-level who had not been brought under the banking system even after 60 years of Independence. The other villages to be covered under this programme are Punnam in Erode district, Servaikaranpatti in Tirunelveli, Nallur in Tuticorin, Andarkulam in Kanyakumari, Myladumparai in Theni, Vadagudi in Nagapattinam and Sorakolathur in Tiruvannamalai district SurveyBefore implementing this programme, the bank had conducted survey in the villages. The bank would strive to provide hassle-free credit flow through the concerned commercial bank so that the villagers do not face any problems pertaining to banking. “The aim of the programme is to improve the livelihood of the villagers through creating awareness on financial inclusion. The eight villages would be extended with general line of credit and government sponsored schemes,” Mr. Ananda said. M.M. Vijay Kumar, Lead District Officer (Dharmapuri, Erode, Krishnagiri, Namakkal and Salem), RBI, said that awareness programmes were conducted in all the schools in Dharmapuri district about banking.
