ERODE: Collector R. Sudalaikannan has urged public to cooperate with local bodies so that the latter can effectively deliver services.

At the Local Bodies’ Day celebrations organised here on Sunday by the Erode Corporation, the Collector said it was not possible for local bodies to implement welfare projects if the public did not cooperate. “Just as it takes two hands to clap, it takes the civic body concerned and the public in its jurisdiction to join together to improve civic amenities,” he said and asked the public to take simple steps like preventing litter to help the local body.

“It is not that you [public] should do extraordinary things, even small measures like preventing dumping of waste on road and using civic body-provided bins will go a long way in ensuring effective waste management.”

Mr. Sudalaikannan then explained the importance of the local bodies. “From panchayat to municipal corporation local bodies are required because the government can take care of people’s needs and address issues only through them. It is also because local governance is essential to address the issues at the earliest.”

Mayor K. Kumar Murugesh thanked watch and ward staff saying though officers ordered execution of works, it was they who actually performed the tasks.

He then listed the development works the Corporation had undertaken and those it proposed to take up.

“The civic body had changed all tiled- and asbestos- roofed buildings in its schools at Rs. 50 crore, renovated daily vegetable market at Rs. 75 lakh to improve hygiene and started building a new office complex.”

About water supply, he claimed that no other local body provided as much water as the Erode Corporation and highlighted how people had to wait for long to carry two pots of water.

Further, on water supply, he said the government had allotted Rs. 130 crore for the project to tap Cauvery water from Ooratchikottai and once the initial studies were over, the civic body would implement the project.

Mr. Murugesh spoke on the underground drainage project. It would help fight mosquito menace and eventually help people enjoy better hygiene.

Commissioner B. Balachandran welcomed the gathering and said one of the achievements of the civic body was securing ISO 9001 and 14001 certification for the modern, gasifier crematorium. Councillors, self-help group members and officials participated in the function, which was followed by a rally to highlight the various achievements of the Corporation.
