HEALTHCARE: A doctor screening a boy at Government Medical College Hospital in Tuticorin on Friday. G. Prakash, Collector, and S. Uma, Deputy Director, Health Services, are also seen. Tuticorin: A “Save a child’s heart programme” was launched at Government Medical College Hospital here on Friday. As a new corporate social responsibility, Sterlite Industries India Limited, in association with District Health Society, took the initiative to play a supportive role to cater to healthcare facilities. In September, the SIIL had signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the District Health Society, Tuticorin, to support “Irudhaya Padukaapu Thittam” an initiative of the State Government, to carry our free heart surgeries on the underprivileged children between 5 and 16 years having heart ailments. It sponsored Rs.30 lakh towards the programme. “There had been a significant improvement in the field of health and medicine in the State and Tamil Nadu had played an exemplary role,” Collector G. Prakash said while presiding over the programme. It was made possible only because of the adequate facilities being maintained at primary health centres and the precautionary measures were being undertaken for the patients at PHCs. Moreover, a series of camps, including Varumun Kaapom and other programmes under the auspices of National Rural Health Mission had been conducted in various places of the district. Funds from the World Bank were being used for the Tamil Nadu Health Systems Project for healthcare services. On an average, 5, 000 to 6, 000 beneficiaries were being enrolled every day under the Kalaignar Insurance schemehe said.
Prasad Suryarai, vice-president, Operations, SIIL, J. Ravishankar, S. Uma, Deputy Director, Health Services, and S.K. Nellaippa Ganesan, Cardiologist, spoke.
