Heavy rain in Tuticorin

Good flow into dams in Kanyakumari district

Business as usual: Traders selling vegetables under the cover of umbrellas at a market in Tuticorin on Thursday.

Tuticorin: Heavy rains lashed various parts of Tuticorin since midnight of Wednesday.

The continuous downpour provided a respite from the hot weather conditions to the people and the sky remained overcast throughout the day on Thursday.

It was a welcome relief for farmers.

Many stretches, such as V.E. Road and WGC Road, were waterlogged and low lying areas were inundated. The movement of vehicular traffic was also affected. However, fishing operations continued as usual.

Sathankulam recorded a highest rainfall of 43 mm in the district. Following is the amount of rainfall (in mm) recorded at various places: Tiruchendur – 12; Kulasekarapattinam – 19; Vilathikulam – 20; Kadalkudi – 8; Kayathar – 2; Kadambur – 8; Kovilpatti – 13; Ottapidaram – 8; Vaanchchi Maniyachi – 3; Keelaarasaradi – 2; Ettayapuram – 5; Srivaikuntam – 22 and Tuticorin – 23.

Kanyakumari

The release of water from Perunchani Dam, which was opened for irrigation purpose, was stopped on Thursday following heavy rains, which lashed various parts of the district. The rains have brought cheers to the farmers, who have already raised paddy crops in different parts of the district in the second season.

The present rain would be beneficial to farmers of the tail-end areas after Pazhayaru witnessed heavy flow of rainwater.

However, school and office-goers were put to hardship due to intermittent rains and the sky remained overcast through out the district.

Dhannammal of Ozugunaserry had a miraculous escape after the backside wall of her house, situated on the bank of Parakkinkal, collapsed and fell out side the house.

The Poompuhar Shipping Corporation in Kanyakumari did not operate boat services to Vivekananda Rock Memorial and Tiruvalluvar statue for a few hours.

A maximum rainfall of 22.2 mm was recorded at Myladi followed by 20.8 mm in Nagercoil, 15.8 mm in Kottaram, 15 mm in Kannimar 14.6 mm in Aralvoimozhi, 10 mm in Surulode and 8.9 mm in Boothapandi.

The inflow of water into Perunchani dam was 164 cusecs, 365 cusecs in to Pechipparai dam where as the discharge was 504 cusecs, 74 cusecs into Chittar I where as the discharge was 100 cusecs and 75 cusecs into Chittar II where as the discharge was 98 cusecs.

The water level in Pechipparai dam stood at 24.25 feet , 48.10 feet in Perunchani, 6.33 feet in Chittar I, 6.43 feet in Chittar II and 4.80 feet in Poigai dam.
