Two killed, 51 injured as school van and bus collide

ILL-FATED: The school van and the private bus which were involved in an accident near Palayamkottai on Thursday.

TIRUNELVELI: Two persons were killed and 51 others injured in a collision involving a school van and a private bus near Palayamkottai on Thursday. The police said the bus, proceeding from Tuticorin to Tirunelveli, dashed against the van at Uththamapandiankulam on the Tirunelveli – Tuticorin highway at KTC Nagar around 8.30 a.m.

Van driver A. Mari Mani (30) and a Plus-I student, P. Karpagavalli (15), died on the way to hospital. The injured have been admitted to the Tirunelveli Medical College Hospital and a private hospital. The condition of the three students is said to be critical.

Eyewitnesses said the bus driver had tried to overtake a vehicle and lost control, resulting in the collision.

He has been arrested.

On hearing about the accident, the MDMK’s Marumalarchi Blood Donors Club members and cadre of the Tamil Nadu Thouheedh Jamaath and the Tamil Nadu Muslim Munnetra Kazhagam donated blood.
