Officials blamed for laxity in paying compensation

Special Correspondent

Surpur tahsildar has been transferred

‘Progress in providing relief unsatisfactory in Yadgir and Raichur revenue sub-divisions’

Deputy Commissioners asked to visit 30 flood-hit villages a month

Gulbarga: Regional Commissioner Rajneesh Goel on Thursday admitted that there has been some laxity on the part of the officials at the taluk level in distribution of the compensation amount to the victims of floods and rains in the Gulbarga Revenue Division.

Reacting to the reports appearing in The Hindu on complaints of a large number of victims in many villages about the delay in payment of compensation and taking up of relief and rehabilitation works, Mr. Goel admitted that the official machinery in few taluks and Yadgir Revenue Sub-Division and the Raichur Revenue Sub-Division lagged behind in the distribution of the compensation amount to the flood victims.

However, Mr. Goel said the progress in the distribution of the compensation and relief in affected areas in Lingasugar Revenue Sub-Division in Raichur district and Sedam Revenue Sub-Division in Gulbarga district were exceptionally good.

Mr. Goel, who made a surprise visit to some of the flood-hit villages in Surpur taluk on Wednesday, said: “It has also come to my knowledge that there has been laxity on the part of the officials in the distribution of compensation cheques to the victims. In some of the flood-hit villages which I visited, the people complained about the faulty assessment and payment of less compensation than what they were supposed to get”.

“Chief Secretary S.A. Ranganath has instructed each of the Deputy Commissioners to visit at least 30 villages in a month to ensure speedy distribution of the compensation amount,” he added.

Meanwhile, in a swift action, the State Government on Thursday transferred the tahsildar of the Surpur taluk N.M. Akbar following large-scale complaints from different quarters about the alleged indifference in conducting the survey of damages caused in the floods in River Krishna and its tributaries in Surpur taluk.

Official sources told The Hindu that the Government has posted M. Sharanabasappa in the place of Mr. Akbar as the tahsildar of the Surpur taluk.

Majority of the victims in flood-hit villages in the Surpur taluk are yet to get the compensation amount and the faulty survey of the damaged houses in the floods has been criticised by Surpur MLA Narasimha Naik.
