‘I like Bollywood’

Aparna Alluri

Meet the official DJ for 50 Cent, G-Unit

Beat king: DJ Whoo Kid at the turntables in Bottles and Chimney where he will be performing on Thursday night.

HYDERABAD: Sean Paul, LL Cool J, 50 Cent, G-Unit, Ludacris and the list goes on. Close to 30 artists, some of the biggest names in hip hop and all of it on one turntable. “That’s what I do best. I am going to play classic hip hop, reggae, R&B, continuous hits without a break,” says DJ Whoo Kid, here for the Indian leg of his Asian tour.

The official DJ for 50 Cent and G-Unit, the king of mixed tape, he will be spinning the best of hip hop at ‘Bottles and Chimney’ on Thursday while reputed Canadian Emcee, Liquidsilva plays host.

“This is the third time I am coming to India but it’s my first time in Hyderabad,” he says. “50 Cent has never performed in Hyderabad so I can represent him.”

He will be playing everything that hip hop has to offer from old timers like LL Kool J to commercial hits like ‘Lady Gaga’. “I have done a bit of research on Hyderabad and I think classic hip hop is more popular. But I won’t restrict myself.”

“The trick is to keep women on the dance floor,” he says. “If you can do that everyone is happy. I read the crowd and keep changing my style to keep them on their feet.”

Growing up in Queens, New York, DJ-ing never seemed a plausible career for him. “This is not something I planned. My father wanted me to be an engineer like him. But me and college never really clicked,” he says with a smile.

“LL Cool J, 50 cent all grew up in Queens. When 50 cents’ DJ left town, I had been doing mixed tapes as a hobby for some time. My cousin convinced me to quit my job and DJ for 50 Cent.”

So if not hip hop, what music does he like listening to? “When I am in India I like tuning in to Bollywood. I love the videos for their colour and the music has a flow. Every song is like a movie by itself.”
