Varsity D-zone arts festival to begin in Thrissur today

off-stage events.


Thrissur: Off-stage events of the Calicut University D-Zone Arts Festival will be held at the IES College of Engineering, Chittilappilly, on October 29 and 30.

Addressing a press conference here on Wednesday, University Union chairperson P. Jiji said that preparations for the festival were over.

Percussionist Peruvanam Kuttan Marar will inaugurate the off-stage events. Poet Ravunni and University Syndicate members will take part in the inaugural function.

Poet Kaithapram Damodaran Namboodiri will inaugurate stage events on October 30 at 2 p.m.

As many as 5,000 students from 79 colleges affiliated to the university will compete in 89 events in the five-day fete.

Apart from trophies for overall champions and runners-up, the festival will also present the titles ‘Sargaprayibha’ (for literary competitions), ’Chitrapraytibha’ (for fine arts competitions), ‘Kalapratibha’ and ’Kalathilakam’ (for stage events).

There will be a prize for the topper among women’s colleges.

Venues for the festival will be named, ‘Neelambari’, ‘Chamayam’ and ‘Bharatham’ in memory of writer Kamala Suraiya, actor Murali and writer-director Lohithadas.

University Union vice-chairman M.V. Arun, organising committee general convener P. Sidharth, programme committee convener P. B. Anup and chairman P. H. Shaheel were also present at the press meet.
