Inauguration of Yadgir district may be delayed

Special Correspondent

Government said to be busy with flood relief

An official communiqué on postponement is likely to come by Wednesday: official

Renovation of 62 government buildings to accommodate departments is nearing completion

GULBARGA: The much-awaited inauguration of Yadgir district appears to have been put on hold owing to various reasons, including unfinished administrative work. The inauguration was scheduled for October 31.

Although there has been no official word from the State Government on the postponement of the inauguration, senior officials in the district administration told The Hindu that the Chief Minister’s Office had orally informed the district administration. “An official communiqué in this regard is likely to come by Wednesday,” an official said.

One of the main reasons given for the postponement of the inauguration is the preoccupation of senior officials and the Chief Minister with relief operations in flood-affected areas.

Another reason for the likely postponement of the function is said to be the Government’s inability to decide on the creation of posts across various departments for the new district.

Official sources said that only two days ago, the Government had authorised Regional Commissioner Rajneesh Goel to depute 277 officials to Yadgir district immediately.

The sources said that at least 50 per cent of the staff required for the new district should be deputed for work immediately and that the number of officials sought to be deputed now (277) was not enough.

They said that Chief Secretary S.V. Ranganath had called a meeting of Principal Secretaries on October 5 in Bangalore to finalise the plan to create 889 new posts for Yadgir district, but the meeting could not be held owing to the floods. Renovation work on 62 government buildings to accommodate the different departments in the district is nearing completion, while work on eight private buildings that will also house various departments has not yet begun.

The sources said the agencies that had to supply furniture, office equipment and vehicles required for everyday administration had been identified, and once the Government clearly came out with a date of inauguration, orders would be placed immediately.

Three taluks in Gulbarga district, namely Surpur, Yadgir and Shahapur, will be part of Yadgir district.
