‘Poverty a major hindrance in reach of healthcare to the poor in the country’ Surgical oncology procedure demonstrated live by German doctors HYDERABAD: Former Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu has asked the medical fraternity, particularly those involved in treatment of cancer, to take up research and bring down the costs of treatment to reduce the sufferings of the poor. Speaking at the two-day second International Clinical Oncology Congress, he felt that poverty was a major hindrance in the reach of healthcare facilities to the poor in India, where about 50 to 60 per cent out of 120-crore population is still below the poverty line. Though the costs of treatment for various diseases, including cancer, are less here compared to the US, they require to be brought down further, he said. Medical expertise is available in India for curing cancer but a lot has to be done in preventive healthcare in the form of higher research. However, not much is being spent on research in India, Mr. Naidu said and suggested sharing of better practices and technology will also help in this regard. . Organising secretary of the congress Ch. Mohana Vamsy stated that surgical oncology procedure was demonstrated live by a team of German doctors in the morning, for the first time in India. Managing trustee of the institute Kakarla Subba Rao also participated in the congress organised by the IACI and Nandamuri Basava Tarakam Cancer Foundation.
