COIMBATORE: Consolidated Construction Consortium, a construction service provider with projects in residential, industrial, commercial and infrastructure segments, is imparting education to its workers’ children through a tie-up with the Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan (SSA). K. Sukumar, General Manager (Human Resource) of the company, has said in a release that labourers from different States were working on its project sites in Coimbatore and nearby areas. Normally, crèche facilities were provided at the site for the children. As a CSR (Corporate Social Responsibility) initiative, the company tied up with the SSA four years ago. The SSA imparted education and gave the learning resources. Makeshift classroomsThe company provided make-shift classrooms and additional teacher. Nearly 120 children were educated through this initiative. The initiative was started on a pilot basis and the company planned to extend it to more project sites now. Mr. Sukumar said children aged between six and 14 attended the classes. Since, they would not have any work and would only play on the site when the parents went to work, the parents were also willing to send them to the class. The workers moved from one project site to another depending on the work and they would not be able to enrol the children in regular schools. CertificatesThrough this programme, the children also received certificates that enabled the parents to continue the children’s education in regular schools.
