Stir threat against power project
Staff Correspondent
DEHRA DUN: Villagers of Deval, Narayan Bagarh and Tharali development blocks in Chamoli district have threatened a massive agitation to oppose the proposed 252-MW Devsari hydro-electric project on the Pinder river if the Government does not ensure a free and fair public hearing of their grievances and aspirations.
The growing unrest among the locals could be seen this past week when some of them disrupted an Environmental Public Hearing organised by the Uttarakhand Pollution Control Board setting ablaze some furniture and a tent.
“The authorities have filed a case against several activists of the Deval Sangharsh Samiti and Matu People’s Organisation and efforts are being made to reconvene the hearing in a peaceful atmosphere,” a spokesperson of the Pollution Control Board said here on Thursday. The protesters, however, termed the assurance to hold another hearing as eyewash and urged the Chief Minister to order all hearings to be held in the villages. The run-of-the-river scheme involves construction of an 18-km-long tunnel.
