Team urges panel to clean up rolls

Seeks fair inquiry, deletion of 11,000 names

Alleges that LDF government has planned to rig poll

Seeks transfer of Collector and other officials

NEW DELHI: A Congress delegation from Kerala has urged the Election Commission to hold a fair inquiry by deputing senior officials and delete the names of 11,000 bogus voters from the electoral rolls in the Kannur Assembly constituency.

The delegation, led by Kannur MP and Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee general secretary K. Sudhakaran, alleged that the ruling Left Democratic Front (LDF) government in Kerala had planned to rig the November 7 poll in Kannur with the help the criminal elements from other areas by including their names after obtaining false residence certificates from the village administrative officers and other officials.

He charged that the district administration, including the Collector, were working hand-in-glove with the LDF and sought their transfer. Besides including 11,000 bogus voters of the LDF, the names of nearly 6,000 genuine voters, belonging to the Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF), had been deliberately removed from the rolls.

Meeting

The delegation, which met Chief Election Commissioner Navin Chawla and Election Commissioner V.S. Sampath, said there could be large-scale rigging and law and order problems in Kannur if no action was taken by the commission immediately.

The delegation suggested that the commission could also consider holding the poll with the electoral roll used during the Lok Sabha poll in Kannur.

Action promised

Mr. Sudhakaran later told The Hindu that the commission promised to look into the complaint and take necessary action.

He was hopeful something would be done by the commission. P.J. Kurien and E.T. Mohammed Basheer, MPs, were part of the delegation.
