Windies will be in the big league once again: Ganga

V.V. Subrahmanyam

HYDERABAD: “We just want to do justice to our talent and perform at our best in this tournament,” says skipper Daren Ganga, reflecting the youthful exuberance of Trinidad & Tobago team which is having a dream run in the on-going Champions League Twenty20 championship.

Speaking to The Hindu, Ganga, who has played 48 Tests and 35 ODIs, says that it is a great feeling to keep winning.

“It can’t get better and I am really happy with the way things have gone so far here,” he remarked. Looking back, the 30-year-old Trinidad captain said they tried to keep things simple. “We decided to take it game by game.”

Ganga complimented “the boys” for responding wonderfully in must-win situations. “What is really pleasing is that even the young guys performed exceptionally under pressure. This is great for the team and cricket in general back home,” he said.

A huge fillip

How significant is this performance in the context of the lows that West Indian cricket has hit in recent times?

“We are here not just as the Trinidad team; we represent the entire Islands. Any exceptional performance here should be a huge fillip to the sport back home,” said Ganga.

“I am not aware of the details of the truce between the players and the West Indies Board.”

“But I am confident these things can be sorted out and West Indies cricket will be in the big league once again. There is plenty of talent.”

The big-hitting Kieron Pollard and opener Adrian Barath, who smashed the Diamond Eagles attack, may have been a surprise to the Indian fans but not to the captain. “They may be a revelation of sorts to many. But I know their immense talent and it is good that they have started showing results on such a big platform,” Ganga said.
