ANNUAL RITUAL: The 70-ft effigy of Narakasura before it was set afire at the ISKCON temple in Tirupati on Sunday. TIRUPATI: Deepavali was celebrated at the ISKCON temple in Tirupati on Sunday amid a lot of fun and frolic. Hundreds of ‘Hare Rama Hare Krishna’ devotees and public who gathered at the sprawling ISKCON shrine watched in awe as the 70-ft effigy loaded with firecrackers went up in flames with the temple authorities igniting the fuse. Elaborate arrangementsIt symbolises the triumph of good over evil and the end of demonic traits before the power of Lord Krishna, said ISKCON functionaries who made elaborate arrangements for the festival which attracted a large number of locals. A similar function was organised on Saturday by the ‘Tirupati Adhyathmika Seva Sangham’ near the TTD-run Sri Kodandaramaswamy temple. An effigy, relatively smaller in size stuffed with fireworks was set afire amid spiritual fervour in the presence of a huge congregation of Deepavali revellers. The effigy was fabricated with assistance from children of the area’s Pavani School. The children later distributed sweets to the devotees. Among those present were former MLA M. Venkatramana and Chithrapu Hanumantha Rao.
