VITAL KNOCK: Denesh Ramdin’s innings of 39 proved crucial for Trinidad and Tobago in its win over Somerset in the Champions League in Bangalore on Monday.

BANGALORE: There was no calypso in the stands but Trinidad and Tobago dished out its own version in the middle with a 44-run victory over Somerset Sabres in an Airtel Champions League Group ‘A’ match at the Chinnaswamy Stadium here on Monday.

All-rounder Dwayne Bravo failed to score but joined the party as a bowler, bagging four wickets. Somerset was bowled out for 106 in 20 overs while chasing Trinidad’s 150 for nine in 20 overs.

Trinidad’s victory has opened up the group as Somerset had earlier upset Deccan Chargers at Hyderabad on Saturday. The two qualifiers for the second phase will only be known after the match between the Caribbean side and Chargers at Hyderabad on October 14.

Finding the edge

Somerset floundered at the start as its much-acclaimed opening duo of skipper Justin Langer and Marcus Trescothick failed. Dwayne Bravo squared up Trescothick to find the edge while Langer (15) pulled off-spinner Sherwin Ganga straight to William Perkins at square-leg.

The rest folded up, though Zander de Bruyn (43 n.o., 38b, 3x4, 1x6) delivered a few punches in a losing cause.

Earlier, Trinidad had a brisk start through its aggressive openers — Lendl Simmons (22) and William Perkins (20). Simmons steered and drove seamers Alfonso Thomas and Ben Phillips while Perkins perked up with a six off Phillips.

An uppish steer ended Simmons’s knock as he found Thomas at wide third-man off Phillips. The openers’ alliance that lasted 4.5 overs and produced 43 was the most productive for the Caribbean outfit as the others barring Denesh Ramdin (39, 39b, 2x4) flickered and faded. Perkins was castled by left-arm seamer Charl Willoughby after he switched over to the BEML end.

Darren Bravo fell to a fine reflex catch by Willoughby, who lunged in his follow-through.

Darren’s elder brother Dwayne fell for a blob while skipper Daren Ganga (23) dragged one on to his stumps.

Meanwhile, Ramdin capitalised on his reprieve — he was on 11 when Craig Kieswetter dropped him in the deep. And his run-a-ball effort, along with Sherwin Ganga’s swipes, helped Trinidad finish with a score that proved beyond Somerset.
