“ Tamil conference, an important event in history”

Special Correspondent

Another step: M. Rajendran, Vice-Chancellor, Tamil University, releasing the scientific Tamil books at a seminar in Thanjavur on Saturday.

THANJAVUR: The forthcoming ninth world Tamil Conference to be held at Coimbatore next year is an important event in the history of Tamil and Tamil Nadu said M. Rajendran, Vice-Chancellor, Tamil University, here on Saturday.

Speaking at the 17th seminar on Scientific Tamil organised jointly by the Tamil University and All India Scientific Tamil Association here, Mr. Rajendran said that the State government was paying much attention for the conduct of the conference.

“Time also makes the event all the more important. Fourteen years have gone by after the eighth world Tamil conference held at Thanjavur in 1995. There are lot of changes and growth in language, culture particularly scientific Tamil,” he added.

It was after the second world Tamil conference that the Ulaga Thamizhaaraichi Niruvanam (World Tamil Organisation) was established. It was after the fifth world Tamil conference that the Tamil University was established. “Perhaps after the ninth world Tamil conference, Tamil University may emerge into a World Tamil University. That is our expectation,” Mr. Rajendran said. Tamil has now attained the classical language status, he added.

N. Ramachandran, Vice-Chancellor of Periyar Maniammai University inaugurated the conference.

He said that websites and television channels had done a lot of damage to the Tamil Language. “We are born as Tamils. But we feel ashamed of speaking in Tamil. This mindset should be changed and we should feel proud that we are Tamils,” Mr. Ramachandran said.

Mr. Rajendran released books on the occasion and Mr. Ramachandran recieved them.

Rama Sundaram, Secretary, All India Scientific Tamil Association welcomed the gathering.

K. Annadurai, Professor, Department of Scientific Tamil proposed a vote of thanks.
