A raw account of crime in U.P.

Om Puri and Mithun Chakraborty in ‘Baabarr’

Baabarr (Hindi)

Cast: Soham Shah,

Mithun Chakraborty, Om Puri

Director: Ashuu Trikha

After trying the mundane, director Ashuu Trikha turns realistic with this raw account of crime in the badlands of eastern Uttar Pradesh. Here crime is a business and is nurtured with passion. Loose cannons abound in bylanes and can be fired by someone who has the power. Baabarr (newcomer Soham Shah) is one such sapling. Circumstances make him lose the fear of death. The plot centring on the gang rivalry and the other triangle of Bollywood — politician-criminal-police — is not mint fresh, but Trikha has got the detailing spot on. Trikha has dared to present the issue as it is. However, Trikha doesn’t believe in brevity. He wants to consume every bullet he has leading to repetition of violent scenes and chase sequences. And the shocking climax doesn’t go with the flow of the film. Soham is believable, Sushant, as his rival, is up to the mark and Mithun Chakraborty as the encounter specialist with a heart is convincing.

But ultimately it is good old Om Puri who steals everybody’s thunder. If you thought he enacted the complete truth of a policeman in Ardh Satya, watch this one.

A.K.
