Capacity expected to lead to massive savings
Special Correspondent
NEW DELHI: The solar power capacity, when fully implemented in 2020, will result in substantial saving of kerosene, diesel and fuel oil.
Twenty million solar lights are estimated to avoid the use of one billion litres of kerosene per annum. Twenty million square metres thermal collectors are expected to save fuel oil in industrial applications and electricity in other applications. Another five million square metre thermal collectors are expected to save about 350 million litres of fuel oil every year and 15 million square metre thermal collectors are expected to save nine billion units of electricity in 2020.
The 3,000 MW of rooftop photovoltaic systems and 3,000 MW of other power plants are expected to be in place by 2020, 50 per cent of which will mainly be used for avoiding the use of diesel during daytime for power generation. These are expected to save about 1,050 million litres of diesel in 2020.
