‘Cooperative farming illogical’

Staff Reporter

The same method was experimented with during the tenure of Nehru, says JP

VIJAYAWADA: The Lok Satta Party (LSP) has criticised ‘cooperative farming’, a new concept being promoted by the State Government, and termed it “illogical”. The party has expressed the view that cooperative farming alone is not a solution to problems plaguing the agriculture sector.

Addressing a press conference here on Saturday, LSP president and MLA N. Jayaprakash Narayan said that the State Government was pushing forward cooperative farming by arguing the State was caught in a vortex of smaller holdings leading to low productivity, low income and low investments, which, in turn, was leading to low productivity. But, in reality, productivity in small holdings was much higher compared to the productivity in large holdings.

He recalled that the Central Government during the Prime Ministership of Jawaharlal Nehru had taken a cue from the erstwhile Soviet Union and experimented with cooperative farming in large holdings at various places, including Aswaraopeta in Khammam district.

But, the productivity turned out to be higher in smaller holdings in Aswaraopeta compared to large holdings.

24-hour power

The LSP chief felt that the State Government should have long-term plans to give a fillip to agriculture.

The 24-hour power supply to farm sector would give a boost rural economy, and this was proved beyond doubt in Gujarat. Migration of people came down by 30 per cent there, he said.

Referring to the ‘massive budget’ introduced in the State Assembly, Mr. Narayan said that the Government should give a per capita fund of Rs. 1,000 to every local body so that they took up developmental works and met their needs. Roughly, it would translate into 8 per cent of the total budget.
