The Corporation primary school in Jafferkhanpet, which will be demerged soon.

CHENNAI: The Chennai Corporation has decided to demerge three schools in the city that were merged last month.

The civic body merged 30 schools in June owing to lack of patronage. Schools in Jafferkhanpet of Zone 9, Gopalapuram of Zone 3, Ranganathapuram of Zone 1 would be demerged. Corporation Commissioner Rajesh Lakhoni said the Corporation would send a circular to the schools on Monday. Teachers would go back to their respective schools after the demerger. Officials said the merger was aimed at giving students access to better infrastructure. Only those schools that had less than 50 students and were located within 500m of another Corporation school with a higher number of students would remain merged.

Before the merger, 313 schools – 139 primary, 109 middle, 38 high and 27 higher secondary schools – were run by the civic body.
