Christian community’s contribution hailed

Staff Reporter

Its cooperation sought in implementing some Govt. policies

NEW DELHI: Appreciating the work done by the Christian community in the field of education, health and development work, Union Minister of State for Minority and Corporate Affairs Salman Khursheed said over the weekend: “I often ask my own community members as to why we cannot learn and be inspired by the Christian community to do for the Muslim community what they have done for theirs.”

He was speaking at a function organised at Archbishop’s House where he was felicitated by the Federation of Catholic Associations. The function was presided over by Delhi Archbishop Vincent M. Concessao.

The Minister also sought cooperation of the community to help the government in implementing some of its policies, particularly for the poor and the marginalised. “Let us join hands to better the lot of our people as the Christian community has a good track record of working for this particular class of people,” he said.

During the programme, Delhi Catholic Archdiocese spokesperson Dominic Emmanuel expressing the concerns of the Christian community said: “The community sometimes senses that when the minorities of this country are considered the Christians are left out and are rarely able to take advantage of government schemes, particularly funds.”

Senior laity member of the Church John Dayal presented a memorandum to the Minister listing the concerns of the Christian community and noted that the government should take into consideration how freedom of religion was being denied to Christians.

“Our concern is also towards the Dalit Christians who are being discriminated against by successive governments for over 50 years. The Government should also consult the community while forming educational policies,” he added.
